The League of Filipino Students (LFS) and former President Ferdinand Marcos share the same birthday – and that is the only thing they have in common.

Last September 8, days away from its 34thfounding anniversary, President Aquino likened the LFS to the Marcos dictatorship. He said that he refused an invitation to be a founding member of the LFS because he found it authoritarian that the organization had an “executive committee” that “dictated to members what to do”.

Current LFS Chairperson and former Atenean Terry Ridon disagreed and called Aquino “a man with no sense of history”. He said that Pres. Aquino seemed to have conveniently forgotten the participation of the LFS in the resurgence of protests against the dictatorship after the death of his father until the overthrow of Marcos in EDSA.
