Gov’t pressed to protect OFWs, Filipinos in Egypt

Amidst rising concern for the safety and welfare of at least 6,500 Filipinos in Egypt, the Philippine government continues to be under flak over dwindling and indecisive actions to ensure the protection of Filipino nationals in the region.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) earlier announced that it had allotted P25 million as emergency fund for the evacuation of OFWs in Egypt. The agency made the announcement after migrant organizations and concerned groups called on the government to facilitate the evacuation of OFWs in light of the ongoing crisis in Egypt.

However, as of this writing, out of at least 6,500 Filipino nationals in Egypt, only 26 have so far arrived and just 20 more are expected to return.
